INTRODUCTION OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

Open Source Software is software that can be freely used, modified, and distributed. Companies turned to proprietary software products to help them run their businesses in the past. However, due to the numerous benefits, many companies are turning to open-source software (OSS) to help them run their IT infrastructures.

Open-source software's main mission is to give users the freedom to use software for any purpose. Most open-source software is built collaboratively and shared publicly. The source code of open source software is made available for anyone to view, modify and distribute.

The U.S. military developed an early example of open-source software in the 1960s under an initiative called Project MAC at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Project MAC developed Multi-Access computing systems that supported time-sharing applications. Though MULTICS was not successful as a commercial product, it influenced later systems like Unix and Linux.

Users do not necessarily perceive the benefits of open-source software at the time of adoption but rather throughout the user's lifetime as they discover that they can modify it in ways they feel are beneficial. This could be after seeking out such modifications or simply by using it over some time and finding issues they feel should be improved. The term "open source" can be confusing because different communities have used it with different meanings. The open-source definition defines licenses for software and other material requiring copyright clearance. Open-source software began as a response to the limitations of proprietary code. The open-source development and distribution model was inspired by student hackers who lacked access to proprietary code locked behind corporate firewalls.

Open Source Application: Some of the most popular open-source applications include Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, and Google's Android OS for mobile devices.
